About Me

My photo

Hey there, I'm Sunny Shell, a wretch saved by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ the Lord. I'm married to the most incredible man on earth, who loves Jesus more than he loves me, and we have two precious adult sons.

The compassionately endures me through my metabolic disease (since 2004) that enables me to be more prayerful and careful about commitments I make and helps me to make the best use of my short time here on earth.

If you want to know more about me, click HERE.

Glee, Twilght, Potter...oh my!

Oh my, oh my, oh my... indeed!

What happened to "be holy, for I am holy." What happened to light not having anything to do with darkness? What happened to living as a new creation of God, in the Spirit of Christ and not as the old creature who lived enslaved by his/her own passions and lusts?

What happened to living in this world yet not of it? What happened to being distinguished as children of the Most High God, rather than blending with the rest of the world?

What happened to watching or listening to things that build up our faith, things that are innocent, pure and good; things that do not defile our minds with sordid images and our hearts with lyrics that only praise and promote self love?

What happened to biblical Christianity?

"Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, You shall be holy, for I am holy. And if you call on Him as Father who judges impartially according to each one's deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot."
~1 Peter 1:13-19

I am disheartened by the volumes of professing Christians who watch, promote and quote shows/movies like Glee, Twilight and Harry Potter as well as listen to people like unLady Gaga (thanks Allison for the accurately renaming this sexually immoral and disturbingly lost and hedonistic girl).

Are there other options? Sure there are! Plenty! But instead of looking into God's word, reading it as if it were our spiritual food (because it is) and meditating on it day and night, we spend our days and nights polluting our hearts and minds with the dung of this world. If we obeyed God, if we lived as if we believe and trust Him, how much more will we be satisfied in Christ and the awesome freedom we've been given to live in God's grace? If we did this, if all those who professed to know and love Christ, spent as much time reading God's word and seeking His counsel, rather than defiling our hearts and minds with the wicked and dark things of this world, the distinction between the children of the devil and the children of God would be clear -- as it should be.

"Jesus said to them, 'If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but He sent Me. Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear My word. You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires."
~John 8:42-44a

God clearly states in His word that His children are to be holy; that we ought not slander, gossip, dress immodestly, allow sexually immoral thoughts creep into our minds and hearts by what we watch or hear. Our Father God commands His children to keep ourselves, mind, body and soul, exclusively for Him and for His glory and not for our own pleasures and desires that don't align with His word.
"Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body...Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do what I tell you?"
~1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Luke 6:46

Beloved brothers and sisters in the Lord, before you choose any type of media entertainment, consider our Lord Jesus, consider your children, consider your testimony, consider those who are weaker in faith who may stumble due to your lack of restraint.

A valuable resource our family has used for years is Plugged In Online, a ministry of James Dobson's Focus on the Family. Even our oldest son, who is now 18 and a senior in high school has this link bookmarked on his profile so he can read the reviews for movies, music, games, etc. prior to exposing himself to anything that would dishonor God and defile his mind and heart. The unique thing about Plugged In Online is that they include in their reviews whether or not there is any vulgar language, blasphemy and sexual immorality in movies, TV shows, games, etc. This is really a wonderful resource for any Christian who wants to keep God's holy temple pure.

  1. You are right my friend. This has bothered me for a while. As Christians we need to set the standard, not follow the world. Thanks for this great word today. BTW, I love PluggedIn.

  2. Amen, my sis! I've been examining this a ton the past few years, and I whole-heartedly agree. Of course, I've had to look at my own habits and be open to the Lord's idea of them. By giving up some of the things in my spare time that dishonor Him, He has filled my time with awesome things, like friends who sharpen me, opportunities to spend time with Him and serve Him, also more time for good books and prayer and study...wouldn't go back for nuttin' honey!

I love you. And btw, you are one of the friends who sharpens me. I'm so thankful for that.

  3. You know Sunny, I wonder this myself. How can "Christians" watch and listen to this garbage? Because that's what it is, garbage. Why are they filling their spirit with such horrible things? Let me know if you ever find out. OY! Oh and I look at Plugged In Online ALL THE TIME.
    Love ya sister.

  4. Precious sisters Alicia....AMEN! I think the reason why we Christians no longer set the standards, but follow the world is because many have believed the devils lie that we're missing out...and we are -- from EVIL (just like in the Garden, Adam and Eve's eyes were already opened to good, they just weren't opened to evil, until they ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil). If they thought about it, they would've realized, only knowing God (that is good) was GREAT and would've left the forbidden fruit alone...just like we should. :o) There's a lot we can still learn from Adam and Eve. :o)

Sweet sister Lalee, wow! Thanks for sharing that! What wonderful work the Lord is doing in you! And thank you for your kind & encouraging words. I love you too and am so grateful to God for you in my life.♥

Lovely sister Kim, you are right! It IS garbage! So crazy Christians don't want to eat off the Lord's table, but rather eat garbage...hard to believe, but many do it. I think it's b/c they don't know it's garbage. Maybe someone should tell them...oh wait, I just did. ;o) Hee, hee. I pray that this exhorts many to turn away from the world's ways and turn back to God. Love you too my humorous sis!♥

  5. I have thought this for a long time too. It's really sad. We are very careful what we watch and listen too. We hardly go to the movies b/c there aren't many to watch that aren't filth. We cut our cable off b/c even commercials during the news are horrible. I don't want my boys minds corrupted b/c of my own selfishness or own ignorance of evil things that come on. I was submitted to stuff that put a spirit of fear in me (movies and t.v.) from a young age and I just conquered that fear at age 24,I am 28 now. I never want my boys to have to go through what I did.

I admire you and your stand. It's sad that when you do take a stand not many agree with you. There are things I even through out of the house that had subtle hints of dishonoring God. It's so easy to miss things when you don't ask God to show them to you.

  6. Hello precious sister Heather,

So nice to hear from you! :o) While I agree with most of what you share here, I do want to caution you however from cutting your family completely off from the world, b/c we do live in it and are called to be wise about what is in it. We need to be careful not to shelter our children and put them in a Christian bubble, for that is actually quite harmful to them; rather, we need to teach them how to wisely handle themselves. For example, we watch the news and other things (that are not ungodly) and when ungodly commercials come on, we either pause the show or fast forward through the commercial (if it's a show we've recorded).

We've also taught our sons to divert their eyes, which has been very useful b/c they do that in real life. When your sons grow up sweet Heather, you will not be able to protect them from immodestly dressed women, but if you teach them how to handle it now, it will become a habit and natural reaction to them.

Our sons are 18 and soon to be 16 and they handle themselves very well in public and in school b/c we haven't sheltered them, but have prepared them for what they may experience. It takes more time and lots of hours of training, but our children are worth the effort aren't they? More importantly, Christ our Lord is more than worthy of our love & obedience. True? :o)

  7. What does someone do when the spouse is not saved and while praying for their salvation you also try to shine some light on topics such as this but seem to only fail miserably. When praying for their salvation the main focus, other important areas tend to get neglected.

What to do then? How can you "shine the light" in important topics involving family when they dont have the Holy Spirit living inside them to enable them to understand? ...

  10. Hey precious sister Faith, I'm sorry it took me so long to respond. :o)

Well, the most important thing for an unsaved spouse is to be saved. Concentrating on or being bothered by their ungodly behavior is only a distraction from Satan to get your eyes off of Christ.

Jesus says that if you abide in Him, you WILL bear His fruit. You WILL be His light and salt to the world. It's God's light and it's His work, not ours. Our job is simply to obey and abide in Christ and not allow ourselves to get sidetracked by always wanting to try to "fix" the people in our lives. Only Jesus can transform hearts.

Hope this encourages you sister and exhorts you to press on! :o)

your response was so good and deffinitly led by the Holy Spirit. I had those same questions as Faith asked and I still think on them now that we are parenting the children seperatly but Gods advice is always applicable. We pray for their Dad's salvation together and I pray for my heart to not be hardened towards their father because how could I pray for him with a hard heart.

and one more thought. when I was married I allowed my husbands lack of faith and morals to weaken my godly decision making when I didn't have to. don't make this mistake, be His light and salt in your marriage.

  13. Oh AMEN and AMEN precious sister Tiffany! It is impossible to pray FOR someone when our hearts are hardened...we can only pray against them (I know, I've done it more times than I care to remember). But I'm so grateful for God's faithfulness to teach and discipline me so I don't stay in the pit of my own judgments about people, rather He shows me how to see others in the light of His righteousness, which always humbles me and makes me grateful for the fact that He calls me His daughter.

Great exhortation re: being the salt and light in an unequally yoked marriage. :o) Thank you Tiffany! I so appreciate you! Love you sister!♥
